College lands £200k project in Morocco
Pilots from the Tangier Port who have been training at South Tyneside College are so impressed with our simulator system they decided to invest in the specialist equipment themselves. The system will be installed in what will be the largest port in the Mediterranean and the Pilots also requested consultancy from our knowledgeable and experienced staff to set the system up and running.
Paul Hodgson, Resource Manager, Marine Simulation Ports and Harbours, visited the Pilots to assist with the review of tenders sent to them and as most of the documents were in French he was pushed to the limit of his language skills, he comments:
“Apart from Arabic the Moroccans speak French and good English which is a humbling experience. We have a great working relationship with the Moroccan Pilots and they were very grateful for our support.
“The consultancy project is worth £200k to the College and will involve us testing the newly installed system so I am looking forward to a return visit along with Head of Department, Chris Thompson, later this year.”
Bob McDonald, Chair of Governors at South Tyneside College is thrilled with the new contract, he comments:
“This contract once again confirms our reputation as a leading international marine college with first class facilities and lecturing staff. It’s fantastic that South Tyneside College’s simulator team’s knowledge and skills have been recognised on an international level. “
Whilst on his trip, Paul managed to surround himself in the culture of his new colleagues, he comments:
“I took a trip to Asilah which is an old medieval town on the coast and Chefchouen an ancient town in the mountains which is steeped in local traditions and culture. Everywhere was very busy due to the build up to the Eid celebration and huge markets were packed with people buying food for the festivities, including a sacrificial sheep for each household. Probably the best aspect of the trip was the warmth and hospitality of the people; nothing was too much trouble and everyone went out of their way to welcome me.”
