Ahoy there, the anchor returns!

The Westoe campus of South Tyneside College has welcomed back its figurative anchor from the Marine Safety Training Centre on the riverside at South Shields.

The giant anchor will be grounded in its original home, at the front of South Tyneside College’s Westoe campus.

Lindsey Whiterod, Principal and Chief Executive at South Tyneside College is thrilled to see the anchor back, she comments:

“The college and South Shields has a long history with seafarers and the marine industry, by bringing the anchor back to its original location we are building on the original foundations of the college and the history of South Shields.”

The return of the figurative anchor coincides with the preparations for South Tyneside College’s 150th birthday in 2011.

Bob McDonald, Chair of Governors at South Tyneside College comments:

“The staff and students at South Tyneside College are very excited that the anchor has returned. It’s a symbol that the whole college and community has embraced for many years.”
 
To celebrate the event previous marine college lecturer, David Bell is writing a history book about the college due to be published in 2011.

David is currently researching the history of South Tyneside Marine College and needs former students or lecturers of the marine college to share any memories or anecdotes that could be included in the book.
