College students clean up at the AHT Awards
Hairdressing and Beauty students from South Tyneside College have once again cleaned up at the regional final of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists Awards (AHT) winning eleven awards, topping the leader board in six of the twelve categories.
The competition, which is one of the most prestigious in the hair and beauty industry, was held at the Federation Brewery, in Gateshead, and featured scores of colleges and schools from across North East England.
South Tyneside College students won thirteen awards, including six first places, ‘Student of the Year’ and the most desirable award ‘Regional College of the Year’ a title which the College has held for eleven years. They also picked up four second places and one third.
Chloe Williamson, aged 18 from South Shields was crowned Hairdressing Student of the Year, she comments:
“I was so happy when they said I had won, I have worked really hard and to be named Student of the Year was just amazing. The whole department really came together to work on the entries and the lecturers have been really supportive.”
Andrew Parkes, head of hairdressing, and a senior lecturer at South Tyneside College, added:
"Hairdressing and beauty therapy at the college has built a great reputation over the years for quality teaching and learning, we continually work hard to offer the best training to our students and show the talent we have at South Tyneside College.”
Beauty lecturer Karen Cummings said:
“We have had a fantastic year in the beauty department and this is the icing on the cake, we concentrate on developing the creative talents of our students to make them commercially viable to work in the fast moving fashion industry, well done to all the winners.”
Lindsey Whiterod, Principal and Chief Executive at South Tyneside College was at the event, she comments:
“It’s such an achievement for the College; the department have held the title for eleven consecutive years, which is an accomplishment alone. They have all worked so hard and as a College we are extremely proud.”
