Certificate of Competency - Second Engineer (III/2) - Direct Entry

Course content:

You will study:

Academic subjects:

• Mathematics
• Engineering Drawing
• Naval Architecture (Chief Engineer level)
• Applied Heat (Chief Engineer level)
• Applied Mechanics (Chief Engineer level)
• Electrotechnology (Chief Engineer level)

Professional subjects:

• Engineering Knowledge - General
• Engineering Knowledge - Motor

These are achieved using the Second Engineer EK only course.

Course structure:

Module A - 11 weeks
   Mathematics
   Engineering Drawing
   Applied Heat *

Module B - 11 weeks
   Applied Mechanics *
   Naval Architecture *
   Electrotechnology *

* Chief Engineer Level

You must enrol on the full programme. Exemptions from this criteria will only apply for students who have previously studied at this centre.

Course and exam dates: 2012-2013

Assessment procedure:

The current method of assessment is by external examination prepared by SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

Single subject certificates are issued for passes in the academic subjects and for a combination of professional subject passes ie General/Motor.

Upon passing the required assessment and an MCA Oral Examination* you will be awarded the Certificate of Competency.

Written examination papers are of three hours duration.

*Please note: You must possess a MCA Notice of Eligibility to apply for an oral examination and undertake the SQA professional subjects.

Entry requirements:

A Minimum of EOOW Certificate of Competency or the necessary MCA recognised initial training and the necessary sea service to apply for a Notice of Eligibility.

Qualifications achieved:

Second Engineer (III/2) with Chief Engineer exemptions
