Certificates of Competency: Engine
Our courses cover all certificates of competency available from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), the issuing authority in the UK.
Taught full-time courses are available for all certificates. Some certificates also provide guided study options – making it easier to fit your study around your work.
Guided study students can study at a pace to suit them, either at College or elsewhere. All guided study students enjoy our outstanding tutorial support.

ALL students must be in possession of a Notice of Eligibility from the MCA before being allowed to sit Engineering Knowledge (General/Motor/Steam) written and oral exams. Flexible Learning Options
Have you considered our flexible learning courses? These courses have been tailor-made to support Marine students who wish to undertake their training away from the College, courses include:
- E-Learning for Engineer Officer of the Watch (III/I) Sciences
- Distance Learning for Chief Engineer (111/2)
There are no formal lectures. Instead, each course has a flexible study programme which will support and guide you during your studies. The course pace can be tailored to suit the individual, so you can complete your qualification as quickly or as slowly as you wish.
