Foundation Degree in Education and Care

Course summary:

The programme teaches you theoretical and practical skills that you can apply directly to your workplace. In the first year your studies will focus on academic learning skills, children’s development, the social context of childhood, understanding the curriculum, diversity and inclusion thinking skills and project design and development. In the second year, your studies will include aspects of working relationships, social policy, professional practice in safeguarding of children and young people, learning technologies and undertaking a research project.

Course structure:

The course is part-time and is run over two years. Teaching is by experienced lecturers who have worked in education settings so they can fully support you in your studies. What you learn in the classroom will be complimented by work-based assessment; so there's plenty of opportunity to study in your own organisation and work role.

Assessment procedure:

Assessment strategies are varied and include presentations, assignments and reflective accounts.

Entry requirements:

We welcome applications from holders of a BTEC or CACHE Diploma in Education and Childcare, or an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent. Additionally, applicants must have GCSE Maths and English (grade C or above) or equivalent. Applicants should have at least two years relevant working experience.

£4000 per academic year

Qualifications achieved:

If you successfully complete the course you will graduate with a Foundation Degree in Education and Care from the University of Sunderland.

Progression opportunities:

The Foundation Degree is a valuable qualification in its own right. However, students who wish to continue their studies could join the top-up year of the Education & Curriculum Studies degree (BA Hons).

The programme will help you move forward in a career in children’s education. It can enhance your understanding and skills in a range of settings including early years, co-located services and Special Educational Needs, as well as in teaching assistant or support roles.
