Level 1 and Level 2 Introductory Certificate in Welding Skills

Course summary:

These are Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQ). They are intended for those who need to obtain a basic skill in manual metal arc, oxy-acetylene, metal inert gas or tungsten inert gas welding.
Courses have a 60 hour time period for the programmes including end assessment. The courses are flexible and are held throughout the year with time slots agreed upon enrolment.

Course content:

The awards consists of four welding processes, each process at each level carries an award. The award
provides progression through the award levels and across the range of welding processes within a level.
The award is for those whose aim is to enter the industry and for those wanting to gain a welding certificate for their own personal skills development.
Upon completion of level 2 Certificates, students can also have their test pieces tested in accordance with British Standards 4872 which is equally recognised across industry for an additional cost of £65.

Assessment procedure:

The assessment  includes five mandatory practical tests and an oral test which covers the knowledge requirements for each programme of study. The oral test will be carried out by the assessor following the successful completion of the practical tests.
For the practical tests acceptance to be assessed by visual inspection only.
For level 1 certificates knowledge questions consist of 15 set oral questions for each qualification based on qualification handbook knowledge requirements.
For level 2 certificates knowledge questions consist of 20 set oral questions for each qualification based on qualification handbook knowledge requirements:

Entry requirements:

No specific prior qualifications, learning or experience are required for candidates undertaking the qualification(s). However, candidates must have the potential and opportunity to be successful in gaining their qualification.

Progression opportunities:

These qualifications are a platform for progression
to other City and Guilds awards that have a welding route, for example: 2800 Certificate in Engineering –
Welding & 2800 Certificate in Engineering – Fabrication & Welding. The award can also provide skills
development training towards an NVQ in Welding or an Engineering NVQ award that includes welding optional units, for example: Performing Engineering Operations.
