South Tyneside College is a member of the Association of Marine Electronic and Radio Colleges. As an AMERC approved centre we are authorised to provide courses in GMDSS operation and techniques, leading to examinations for the GMDSS certificates issued by the UK Government. Examinations for GMDSS certificates are conducted by trained examiners provided by the AMERC Regional Examination Centre (REC).
UK GMDSS Examinations have both theory and practical elements.
Theory is normally examined using a written test with either long written answers or multiple choice selections depending on the examination.
The practical elements involve performing a range of tasks on marine communications equipment as directed by the examiner. These tasks will be based on the normal operations which you would need to perform when using the equipment at sea.
For further information and on GMDSS courses please follow the link to the AMERC website Frequently Asked Questions.
South Tyneside College offers a range of GMDSS Radio courses including the General Operators Certificate of Competency (GOC), Long Range Certificate (LRC) and Restricted Operators Certificate. We offer a Revalidation course for candidates whose STCW endorsement is no longer valid.
We also have a fully equipped Radio Facility which allows us to run a GMDSS Radio Maintenance course.
