A former South Shields Marine School student and his crew have been recognised by the International Maritime Organisation for their bravery in the rescue of mixed migrants at sea.

Captain Michael Christopher Bower and the crew of the M/V OOC Jaguar OOC Opielok Offshore Carriers GmbH & Co. KG were commended for their display of bravery, professionalism and compassion, upholding the highest traditions of the sea.

In one year the Captain and crew rescued a total of 1,006 people at sea, off Libya, while working aboard a Platform Supply Vessel, with only 14 crew in total.

Captain Michael Bower commented: “I have been involved in a number of rescues now, I am aboard a PSV working the Libyan oilfields so have seen first-hand the horrible situation with regards to migrants.”
