An up-and-coming but already renowned barber is going to great lengths to take a masterclass at South Tyneside College on Wednesday, December 5.

Hayden Cassidy is traveling from Dublin to display her talents to students and established barbers keen to learn new skills.

Although barbering for less than four years, she has already won a reputation for her trend-setting technique and in vogue styling.

She will be joined at the Modern Barbering event by Tom Baxter, the North East’s first Master Barber, who is based in North Shields.

He boasts a celebrity clientele that includes MTV stars and Newcastle United and Sunderland footballers.

They will be at our Westoe campus in St George’s Avenue, South Shields, for a skills’ session which starts at 6.15pm and ends around 9pm.

Tickets are priced at £25 and all attending will receive a goody bag of Osmo hair products.

Hairdressing lecturer Donna Easton said the event would inspire people already barbering – and students new to the industry - to reach greater heights.

She said: “Together, Tom and Hayden create a fantastic blend of experience and fresh talent.

“Tom is very well known for his creative styling and exceptional barbering skills, while Hayden has established a name for herself in a very short time.

“They have the high skill levels to support our students to learn and for people already barbering to find out about new styles and techniques. Throughout the evening, they will be showing off the cuts and trends that are currently in fashion.

“This is a must-attend event for anyone interested in barbering as a career, and will be of great benefit to people already working in this industry.”

The barbering department is one the biggest in the North East following major investment last year. It added an extra 16 work stations to the training shop, bringing the number to 30.

Expansion allowed the centre to match an increase in people from their teens to 50s wanting to work in the sector.

Barbering has undergone an upsurge in people pursuing it as career, due to an increase in well-groomed male celebrities across television, music and social media.

Around 60 students are currently enrolled on courses which teach skills such as trims and wet shaving.

Courses, which range from level 1 to level 3, are popular with men and woman – and new enrolment starts in January 2019.

Those who sit programmes include people already working as barbers in salons who want improved qualifications to go with their already fine-tuned skills.

Donna and award-winning barber Allan Stone, owner of Stoney’s barbershop in South Shields, and a certified Master Barber, form the key teaching team.

Male customers of any age can pop in, without appointment, to be given their favourite style.
