This course is aimed at those working in the children and young people’s sector and those interested in the wider aspects of children’s well-being. It will be of particular interest to practitioners involved with vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people, or who currently work in areas of social deprivation. This course is in addition to a main programme or qualification and can be used as continuous professional development (CPD) for current practitioners.
The course will cover the following aspects of study which will be assessed via written assignments:
An understanding of the causes and influences that affect the life chances of children and young people, including in-depth explanations and analysis of poverty and social policy.
An understanding of the holistic effect of poverty and disadvantage on the child’s development and how this will affect later development.
An understanding and analysis of the purpose of early intervention and the overall impact this can have on future life chances.
An understanding of available support mechanisms and wider partnerships (both national and local) and the implications for strategic planning to meet the needs of the vulnerable and disadvantaged.
An understanding of the role of the practitioner in supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people as positive agents of change, and how this should aim high for the children and young people, both personally and within practice.
A relevant level 3 qualification and/or current practice with vulnerable or disadvantaged children and young people.
All work is assessed through written assessments.
Study on this course can meet the needs of CPD and when combined with other level 3 programmes can allow entry on to the Foundation Degree in Education and Care.
