Tyne Coast College receives glowing Ofsted report following recent inspection

Tyne Coast College has demonstrated its continued commitment to students with the recent release of its Ofsted report. Following a full inspection (February 13th to February 16th, 2024), the college received a ‘Good’ rating across all areas.

The inspection, which covered TyneMet College, Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College, South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School (part of Tyne Coast College), focuses on key judgements made around the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management – and found that Tyne Coast College was ‘good’ in all areas.

Ofsted reported that “learners and apprentices at Tyne Coast College benefit from consistently high-quality teaching and value the support they receive from staff.” The report highlights that achievement across all provision types is exceptionally high, with notable improvements in recent years for learners on education programmes for young people and adult learning programmes.

Of particular note, is the substantial new knowledge and development of important academic and vocational skills that students gain at Tyne Coast College, preparing them effectively for their careers. This is further supported by valuable work experience and work-related activities that supplement the curriculum, providing students with practical insights and hands-on learning opportunities.

The report also commends Tyne Coast College’s “forward-thinking approach to programme design, with courses tailored to align closely with future employment opportunities. Well-qualified teachers meticulously plan the curriculum to ensure learners and apprentices develop not only knowledge and skills but also the necessary behaviours over time, enhancing their prospects in the job market.”

Moreover, Ofsted noted the College’s strong engagement with stakeholders and its keen understanding of local and regional priorities had strengthened since the appointment of several new senior leaders. They also found that “The college’s curriculum strategy is thoughtfully crafted to align with local labour market information, catering to the needs of the community on both sides of the Tyne.”

Principal of South Tyneside College and TyneMet College, Mandy Morris said;

"We are immensely proud of the Ofsted report findings, which reflect the dedication and hard work of our staff and students." "This achievement reaffirms our commitment to providing an exceptional life-wide learning experience to our students, equipping them with everything they need to move on to the next stage of their life, personally and professionally."

The recent inspection reflects the college’s impressive high standard of quality of education which can be evidenced by its national data set, which places it in  the top 10% of colleges nationally.
