March on Navigation | New Starters (Pre-Cadet/Sponsorship)
Thursday, March 11th, 6pm-7pm
Do you have a passion for technology? Do you want to explore more about how ships navigate safely? Hear from Head of School for Deck Officer Certification Jon Milner, as he talks about the maritime sector and the navigation (deck) course programmes we deliver from trainee officer to captain and so much more!
Jon started out as a deck cadet himself in 1995 for P&O Containers (later P&O Nedlloyd) before later qualifying as an OOW in 1998, Chief Mates in 2003 and Masters in 2009, all at South Shields Marine School. Jon has vast knowledge and experience of working on container ships sailing worldwide. When he left sea in 2010, he started as a Lecturer at the Marine School before being promoted to Curriculum Leader then Head of School in 2018. Jon manages all our Deck course programmes including our Pre-Cadetship aimed at school leavers, to sponsorship from phase 1 to phase 5 (HNC/D Nautical Science and FDSc in Marine Operations) and senior officer certification.
During this live session, Jon will introduce you to the unique and exciting world that is maritime, focusing on ‘deck’ and the key role it plays in the Merchant Navy sector. Whether you’re looking to start your journey in maritime through a Pre-Cadetship or sponsored programme, upskill in your current profession or would like to know more about our senior remote courses, Jon will guide you through the process and answer any questions you have.

March on Marine and Electrical Engineering (ETO) | Sponsorship/Senior)
Thursday, March 18th, 6pm-7pm
Are you interested in how electrical and electronic systems work? Hear from Head of School for Marine Degrees and Certification, Chris Gray as he talks about the maritime sector and the ‘ETO’ programmes we deliver. He will focus on the different career paths and progression routes that are available including sponsorship (Foundation Degree) through to top-up degree qualifications including BENG and senior marine certification.
Chris began his cadet journey 16 years ago at the marine school, before becoming qualified then working on a variety of ships worldwide including container ships, ro-ro ferries and offshore support vessels. He then completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and was offered a lecturing job at the college, initially teaching ship stability and engineering projects. Chris was then promoted to Curriculum Leader, followed by Head of School.
During this live session, Chris will give you an overview of the unique careers available in the Merchant Navy with a focus on the ETO route and the skills that employers are looking for. Whether you’re looking to start your maritime journey through a sponsored cadetship, upskill in your current profession or would like to know more about our senior remote courses, Chris will be on hand to guide you through your options.

March on Marine Engineering | New Starters (Pre-Cadet/Sponsorship)
Thursday, March 25th, 6pm-7pm
Are you good at problem solving and looking for a career that takes you places? Hear from Head of School for Engineering Officer Certification Tony Bull, as he talks about the maritime sector and the engineering course programmes we deliver.
Tony started out as a Cadet himself 36 years ago, before becoming qualified and working on a variety of ships worldwide including general cargo, container, gas tanker, cruises and much more. He sailed as a Chief Engineer Officer before joining the marine school as a Lecturer, progressing to Curriculum Leader then Head of School. Tony manages a large portfolio of engineering programmes from Pre-Cadet, to sponsorship (Phases 1, 3 and 5 for HNC/D) and commercial courses.
During this live session, Tony will help you get to grips with the dynamic and exciting world of maritime, focusing on the marine engineering discipline and the part it plays in the wider Merchant Navy sector. Whether you’re looking to start your journey in maritime, change career or upskill in your profession, Tony will support and guide you through the process.
