South Tyneside College is a general further education college with specialist provision tailored to meet the needs of students with a range of learning difficulties from mild/moderate to severe, and including those with autistic traits.

Courses within the Foundation Learning Department are aimed at students who do not yet feel ready to access mainstream provision and would benefit from a tailored programme with high levels of support.

We also offer a range of specialist support across college in all curriculum areas. This support includes:

  • Classes taught in small group size
  • A personal tutor to monitor progress and assist with day to day queries
  • Learning support assistants (LSA) to provide support in and out of class as needed
  • Supervision over lunch, break and transport (if necessary)
  • Sensory room and quiet areas within specialist provision and across college
  • Specialist equipment inventory
  • Specialist exam arrangements
  • Individualised targets for academic success and personal development
  • Additional support with English and maths
  • Specialist support and services such as dyslexia, teacher of the deaf and CSW support, counselling service and personal care.

This program is designed around an autism specific curriculum in which learners can follow one of three different pathways:

Life Skills

Level Designed for learners with: Age range Brief outline of course Who to contact 
Pre-entry level - entry level 1 Severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities (SLD) and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) 16-25 The emphasis is on real life activities to develop and enhance personal, social and independent living skills. Learners develop these skills through subjects such as Cookery, Independent Living, Performing Arts, Sport, Personal Lifestyles, Community studies, English and Maths.  Learners also develop an awareness of the world of work through employability, enterprise and work experience where appropriate

Skills Link

Level  Designed for learners with:  Age range Brief outline of course Who to contact
Entry level 2 Severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities (SLD)   This course is for learners with learning difficulties with and/or disabilities who are experiencing barriers to being independent and gaining work.  Key topics include being a good citizen, responsible behaviour, assertiveness, teamwork, rights and responsibilities and decision-making.  Learners require a willingness to work on their personal barriers, use community facilities with support and follow basic health & safety related instructions.

Certificate Foundation Skills for Employment Training and Personal Development (SETPD)

Level  Designed for learners with:  Age range Brief outline of course Who to contact 
Entry level 3 – Level 1 Mild/Moderate learning difficulties (MLD) 16-19

This program aims to develop employability skills and training within a predominantly vocational area to enable students to seek employment and develop skills to remain employable.

Learners have the opportunity to access the provision at a suitable level to meet their particular learning profile. All the programs provide various stages of vocational studies along with academic subjects that develop a strong foundation to build upon.

Supported Internship

Level Designed for learners with: Age range Brief outline of course Who to contact
Level 1 A range of learning difficulties and/or disabilities 16-25 This programme is aimed at young people who want to move into sustainable paid employment and need extra support to do so.  Learning takes place both within the college and within a work placement environment. The amount of days in each and type of work placement will vary depending on the needs and interests of each individual learner.  A Job Coach provides in-work support for young people as required as well as providing support for employers.
