Overview top

This programme is designed to give you a broad understanding and hands on experience of the latest forensic and criminal investigation methods used in the world today. Over the course of the one-year programme you’ll have the opportunity to study everything from applied practical scientific procedures, to crime scene and forensic fire investigation methods. You’ll spend time in our state-of-the-art laboratory learning to use industry standard equipment and approaches adopted by policing forces all over the world.

 You will study four mandatory modules which are:

  • Principles and Applications Science
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Forensic Investigation Procedures in Practice

In addition, you will study two optional units which may include:

  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Forensic Fire Investigation
  • Forensic Traffic Collision Investigation
  • Forensic Photography
  • Microbiology
  • Forensic Photography 

Entry Requirements top

5 GCSEs grade A-C (9-4), including Maths, English and Science.

Assessment top

There are a mix of externally set assignments, alongside internal assignments.

Professional Opportunities top

After year one, successful learners can apply to continue studying on year 2 of the programme at South Tyneside College, or move onto another one-year programme.  Alternatively, they may be able to progress into work or a higher education programme.

The requirements of the qualification will mean learners develop the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by both higher education and employers. For example, practical and analytical skills, reading scientific text, problem solving and carrying out practical laboratory tasks and planning forensic investigations. The qualification also allows you to work in the vocational sector, as a laboratory technician or scientist, or the criminal justice system (including police) for example.
