Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design Practice (Year 1)
Overview
Welcome to the exciting world of Art and Design!
The Level 3 National Diploma in Art and Design Practice is a two year programme of study, during which you will explore the specialist vocations within the creative industry and develop your personal creative identity. This course will support you in exploring the vast range of vocational specialisms including; Fine Art, Illustration, Fashion and Textiles, Photography, 3D and curation. Through specialist briefs, live briefs, workshops, seminars, and guest lectures you will be given the opportunity to hone your craft using specialist materials, processes and techniques. You will become a valued and contributing member of our collaborative studio hub, which is shared with the other levels of art and design as a multi disciplinary community. You will also have access to a range of specialist facilities including a well equipped print room, photography suite/dark room, wash rooms and 3D work area. Your lecturers and specialist technician come from a range of specialist vocational backgrounds including fine art, illustration, architecture and textiles which enriches your curriculum. You will also be supported in solidifying industry connections, including mandatory work experience placements.
During the first year you will explore the specialist vocations through a series of briefs, live briefs, and workshops to gain a foundation understanding of each area. This will also include collaborative projects with other courses within the creative department. By the end of first year, you will have a specialism you are wishing to pursue further during your second year of Level 3.
This course requires a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade 4 or above, including an art or design related subject and must include maths or english. This course is also recommended for students who have completed a full level 2 qualification in art & design, media or related subjects.
English & Maths:
Students who have not received their maths or english GCSE will be supported to achieve the qualification alongside studying their level 3. Maths and english is also embedded into the curriculum through the following examples:
English – Academic reading, visual analysis, communication, presentations.
Maths – Scale, ratio, working with paper dimensions, print, 3D measurement.
Note: It would also be beneficial for the applicant to bring a portfolio of work to show during the interview process.
The Level 3 BTEC diploma is coursework based, delivered through two units in which you will explore introducing, developing and implementing creative skills:
– Unit B1 : Skills Development
– Unit B2 : Creative Response
All coursework and evidence of the assessment criteria will be based on a portfolio of work containing a series of projects you will complete within each unit, culminating in a final unit portfolio submission.
Learners who succeed in completing the Level 3 National Diploma (Year 1) course will be encouraged to complete the second year of the level 3 programme, the Level 3 National Extended Diploma (Year 2) to receive the full level 3 qualification.
Some learners may also choose to progress into employment or apprenticeships within the art and design sector. Full advice and guidance on progression routes and opportunities will be offered throughout the programme of study.
During your year of the national extended diploma, you will explore the briefs through a specialist lens which will include managing and self directing your study. This will culminate in the end of year show which the level 3 cohort oversees and curates with the rest of the art department. By the end of the two years, you will be an established and independent artist with industry experiences and connections, ready to venture into the art and design industry!
