Overview

Studying BTEC Law gives learners a powerful, practical route into understanding how the legal system actually works in real life. It’s dynamic, applied, and rooted in real scenarios—perfect for anyone who wants more than just theory.

This course is full-time and runs for one year.

5 GCSEs grade A-C (9-4), including Maths and English.

Pass in level 2 qualification with GCSE English and Maths.

The course is accredited by BTEC. The units will be assessed in a variety of forms, including written assignments and supervised assessments.

The work completed in each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

  • Civil Law – Learners explore how civil disputes are resolved.
  • Criminal Law – Learners research how laws are made and interpreted, who advises and decides on the outcome of criminal cases and the punishments that can be imposed. Learners will also apply the key elements of crime in non-fatal offence case studies.
  • Applying Criminal Law – Learners examine the law related to specific crimes, including homicide and offences against property.
  • Tort Law – Learners explore how the law of tort protects people and the enjoyment of their property. They will examine negligence, nuisance and occupiers’ liability cases.

Successful learners can continue studying on the HNC/HND Criminology pathway here at South Tyneside College.

This course also leads to a wide range of next steps, from careers in policing, courts, probation, and legal services to roles in business. It also provides a strong foundation for university pathways in law, criminology, and policing—making it a flexible, career-focused qualification.
