SEND &
Additional Learning Support

WHAT IS ADDITIONAL LEARNING SUPPORT (ALS)?

At Tyne Coast College, we believe every learner should feel supported, included and empowered to achieve their goals.

Our Additional Learning Support (ALS) Team is here to support, guide and advise you throughout your time at college. Whether you need help with your studies, exam support, specialist equipment, transition support, or simply someone to talk to, we are here to help.

All students can access support, regardless of their course, level of study, or any support they may already receive from another service. Any support offered will be tailored to your individual needs and informed by appropriate evidence.

Every learner is different, which is why we work with you to create personalised support tailored to your individual needs.

What support can we provide?

  • An allocated SEND Advisor for learners who disclose a Special Educational Need and/or Disability (SEND)
  • A support interview to identify barriers to learning and understand your needs
  • Personalised Inclusion Plans
  • Regular reviews to ensure your support is effective and meeting your needs
  • Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) providing support in and out of the classroom
  • Supervision during lunch, breaks and transport where required

Inclusion Plans

At Tyne Coast College, we want every learner with SEND and/or an EHCP to feel supported, understood and empowered to succeed.

For learners who require additional support beyond Quality First Teaching, we develop a personalised Inclusion Plan.

An Inclusion Plan is a bespoke, evidence-based and person-centred support plan designed around your individual needs. It helps teaching and support staff identify and implement the most effective strategies, adjustments and interventions to enable you to access learning successfully.

This may include:

  • Adjusting how information is presented
  • Providing additional guidance, support or resources
  • Delivering targeted interventions
  • Making reasonable adjustments within the classroom

TAILORED TO THE LEARNER

Every Inclusion Plan is tailored to the individual learner. To ensure the support provided is appropriate and evidence-based, we may use information such as EHCPs, medical or assessment reports, previous support plans and exam access arrangements.

Your SEND Advisor will review your plan regularly and make adjustments where needed to ensure it continues to meet your needs throughout your time at college.

Our aim is to help you feel supported, develop independence and prepare confidently for adulthood.

Transition support

We work closely with learners, parents/carers, schools and external agencies to ensure a smooth and supported transition into college life.

  • Bespoke campus visits and tours
  • Transition events throughout the year
  • Curriculum taster sessions
  • Meetings with our SEND and ALS teams
  • Personalised planning for learners with SEND and/or an EHCP

Our aim is to help every learner feel confident, supported and ready to succeed from day one.

If you want to know more or have any queries about how to access transition support, please contact us: als@tynecoast.ac.uk
