FINANCES AND
YOUR FUTURE
SUPPORTING YOU TO SUCCESS
Studying at college can be life-changing, and nothing should get in the way of that. No matter who you are, we understand everybody’s circumstances are different, so there’s plenty of options for you to look at to make sure you’re financially supported to get the future you want.
ARE YOU A SCHOOL LEAVER?
If you’re aged 16 to 18 and not studying elsewhere, you don’t have to pay for your course fees for the majority of courses. But for those who are aged under 19, you may be able to get some financial support to help towards the costs of coming to college. You could be entitled to a bursary, extra help with costs such as childcare, books, trips, equipment, travel and meal funding.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE FOR A BURSARY?
We want to make coming to college as affordable as possible, so South Tyneside College has a bursary scheme for students that will help with the costs associated with studying.
FREE TRAVEL AND LUNCHES
- All support is subject to criteria – please see the Guidance Notes for funding eligibility in the financial forms section
If you require any help or further information regarding the college Bursary, please contact our Student Services team on 0191 338 8158 or email studentfinance@tynecoast.ac.uk
ARE YOU AN ADULT?
If you’re aged 19+, you could get financial help towards the costs of coming to college. This can include money for extras such as childcare, books, trips, equipment and travel.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Students studying higher education courses at South Tyneside College can find information about available grants and loans on the government website.
FE LOANS
FE loans are available for students aged 19+ wanting to study full level 3 qualifications, as well as approved courses at levels 4 and 5. Rather than having to pay for courses upfront, students will be able to access a loan that they’ll repay once they’ve left the course and are earning over £25,000.
If your loan is for the Access Programme to Higher Education (APHE) and you progress to complete a higher education programme, you won’t have to pay back your FE loan.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
South Tyneside College’s vulnerable bursary scheme provides funding of up to £1,200 pro-rata to those under 19 that are:
- Living in care/recent care leavers
- Claiming Income Support/Universal Credit in their own right
- In receipt of Employment and Support Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment
Students may be eligible for travel support if they live more than 1 mile away from college and free meals. Any students studying on a coure that requires essential kit and equipment will also be eligible for assisance.
All costs will be funded from the £1,200 allocation.
COURSE FEES
If you’re an adult aged 19+, you may have to pay for your course fees. However, the UK government or South Tyneside College will help with course fees on some funded courses if you are/have:
- Studying for courses up to level 2 (all ages)
- In receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), including those receiving National Insurance credits only
- Receiving Universal Credit and mandated to attend the course
- In receipt of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) (WRAG group)
- Declared at enrolment that you’re actively searching and preparing for work and in receipt of either ESA, incapacity benefit, Income Support or DLA
You may also be entitled to fee remission if you’re 19+ and:
- Applying for your first full level 2 course (aged 19-23)
- Applying for your first full level 3 course (aged 19-23) and do not hold a previous level 2 qualification, e.g. 5 GCSEs or O levels at grade C or above
- Studying Maths and English Language GCSE and do not already hold a grade C in these subjects
- Under 24 and applying for a first full level 3
- Studying aims that are Adult Basic Skills certificates and Functional Skills in Maths and English (excluding ESOL basic skills)
- Studying for entry level or a level 1 qualification and requiring a step-up from basic skills in order to progress to a full level 2 (aged 19-23)
Please note: The above does not apply to full-cost or higher education courses. Please contact Student Services for details. Some learners over 19 who are completing courses as part of their employment might not receive funding if the course is not their first full Level 2. This is known as workplace learning and can be delivered in the workplace or at college. Please speak to Student Services to check your funding status.
19+ students in receipt of fee remission won’t be eligible for equipment costs from the Learner Support Fund. Instead, they’ll be able to loan a kit from the department or can opt to purchase one.
Funds are limited, so apply as early as possible. Get in touch or get an application form from Student Services.
