Apprenticeships – What You Can Expect
Hi, I’m Anthony Kelly, Business Engagement Advisor for Apprenticeships. I work closely with local employers and future apprentices every day, and I see firsthand just how rewarding apprenticeships can be.
There are lots of ideas floating around about what an apprenticeship is. Some of the things I hear most often aren’t true barriers – they’re just misunderstandings. Let me share both the exciting opportunities and the common questions I hear, so you can see the full picture.
Earn While You Learn
One of the best things about an apprenticeship is that you earn a real wage from day one. Many employers even pay above the minimum – particularly in sectors like construction, engineering, digital, and business.
Some people worry that pay isn’t enough, or expect it to be higher. The reality is that apprenticeships are designed to align with national wage structures, and you’re also gaining qualifications, practical experience, and industry skills – all while avoiding student debt. It’s a win-win!
A Real Job with Real Benefits
Apprenticeships are full-time jobs from day one. You’ll have a contract of employment, paid holidays, and the same rights as any other worker.
Sometimes people think apprenticeships are “just a place to be” until the training ends, but in reality, most roles are designed as long-term positions. In many cases, your job is already planned to continue once you’ve completed your apprenticeship.
Progression and Growth
Some learners worry that once they finish their apprenticeship, there’s nowhere to go. The truth is, apprenticeships offer clear pathways to progress, with multiple levels – all the way up to degree-level qualifications.
Many apprentices move into higher-level roles, management positions, or further study while continuing to work. The opportunities really are endless.
Skills and Attitude Matter More Than Grades
You don’t need perfect exam results to succeed. Employers care about motivation, attitude, and a willingness to learn. Many apprentices we support didn’t get the grades they hoped for but go on to become highly successful in their roles.
Reliable Information and Support
There’s a lot of misinformation out there – both for students and even some employers. Doing your research or speaking to a careers advisor makes a huge difference.
How We Support You
We guide you through the whole apprenticeship journey:
- Finding suitable vacancies
- Matching you with employers
- CV and application support
- Interview preparation
- Ongoing guidance throughout your apprenticeship
Whether you’re confident or still exploring your options, apprenticeships are a brilliant way to build skills, gain experience, and grow your career.
Even if you don’t secure an apprenticeship straight away, a full-time college course can be a strong alternative route into the same career.
Final Thought
Apprenticeships today are a first-choice career route, offering real jobs, pay, progression, and support. Most of the concerns I hear simply come from misunderstandings – once you know the facts, you’ll see just how rewarding an apprenticeship can be.
