Award in Welding Skills
Level 1 (MIG TIG MMA)
OVERVIEW
These courses are intended for those who need to obtain a basic skill in Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Metal Inert Gas/Metal Active Gas (MIG/MAG) or Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding.
Each welding process has a 45 hour time period including end assessment. The courses are flexible and are held throughout the year with time slots agreed upon enrolment. This course is available on a Tuesday day/evening.
The Level 1 Award is gained by completing one welding process.
The Level 1 qualification is for those whose aim is to enter the industry and for those wanting to gain a welding certificate for their own personal skills development.
No specific prior qualifications, learning or experience are required for candidates undertaking the qualification. However, candidates must have the potential and opportunity to be successful in gaining their qualification.
The assessment includes five mandatory practical tests and an oral test which covers the knowledge requirements for each programme of study. The oral test will be carried out with the assessor following the successful completion of the practical tests.
Practical test pieces will be assessed by visual inspection only. Underpinning knowledge questions consists of 15 oral questions.
These qualifications are a platform for progression to other C&G qualifications that have a welding route.
For example, C&G 2850 Certificate in Engineering – (Welding) and C&G 2850 Certificate in Engineering (Fabrication and Welding).
The award can also provide skills development training towards an NVQ in Welding or an Engineering NVQ award that includes welding optional units. For example, Performing Engineering Operations.
