BTEC Applied Psychology Level 3
OVERVIEW
Psychology is the scientific study of minds and behaviour. As such, it is a part of our everyday lives. An understanding of human behaviour is fundamental to many jobs in society, and this course is a broad basis of study for the applied psychology sector.
This course is designed to support progression to Higher Education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. Taught over one academic year, this course is equivalent in size to one A Level and has 4 units:
- Psychological Approaches and Applications: using psychological concepts to explain contemporary issues such as aggression in society and consumer behaviour.
- Conducting Psychological Research: developing skills in the scientific process and research in psychological enquiry by planning and carrying out a research project.
- Health Psychology: exploring psychological approaches to lifestyle choices and unhealthy behaviour such as stress and addiction.
- Introduction to Psychopathology: developing knowledge of the characteristics and causal factors of mental disorders and approaches to their treatment
Assessment is by a mix of examination and course work.

As part of the course, you will also take part in an external work placement to help you develop your confidence and skills to stand out from the crowd.
5 GCSEs including English, Maths and Science Grade 4-9.
Two units are assessed by examination that is set and marked by Pearson,
Two units are assessed by coursework which is set and marked by the college.
The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements to many courses. When combined with other qualifications such as AS or A Levels, other BTEC programmes and Diplomas, you can progress to higher education.
The course is also useful to help you to progress to a range of vocational sectors where knowledge of psychology is helpful, including law enforcement, business and marketing, education and health care.
