BTEC/Pearson HND Music Level 5 (Session Musician Pathway)
OVERVIEW
The BTEC Higher National qualifications in Music are aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of music and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in music.
In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the music industry, Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Music give students experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training.

Click here to applyThis course is designed for those who have passed Venue Performance and Studio Skills Level 4 (HNC Music) or another similar Level 4 music qualification.
Progression-only course: This is not for students entering directly from school/college; it is for those who have already completed a Level 4 qualification in music.
To ensure the course is the right fit and to assess your creative potential, all applicants — including those progressing from other institutions — must also:
- Attend an audition with the course team
- Complete an interview task
Assessment involves a variety of methods, including case studies, observations or practical work, assignments, time-constrained assessments, and work-based projects. All outcomes of your program are evaluated, and each unit below will be graded as pass, merit, or distinction.
A pass is awarded for meeting all specified assessment criteria, while merit and distinction grades are given for higher-level achievements.

- Unit 31 Creative Music Project
- Unit 36 Advanced Music Event Management
- Unit 40 Mixing and Mastering
- Unit 46 Musical Direction in Practice
- Unit 47 Advanced Performance Techniques
- Unit 48 Lie Arrangement Techniques
- Unit 55 Musicology
The Level 5 Higher National Diploma allows students to specialise by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree-level study.
On successful completion of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma, students can develop their careers in the music sector through:
- Entering employment
- Continuing existing employment
- Committing to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Progressing to university – The Level 5 Higher National Diploma is recognised by Higher Education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant Music-related courses.
Students will be expected to contribute a small fee to the cost of the Cavern Club, Liverpool performance as part of their performance assessment.
