English for Speakers of Other Languages aged 19+

OVERVIEW

ESOL Courses at South Tyneside College

English for Speakers of Other Languages or ESOL, is the course for you if English isn’t your main language and you would like to learn and improve your English.

The ESOL community at South Tyneside College is very friendly and our teachers and other staff will provide you with lots of support throughout the course. We will find the class, level and pace that is best for you. Our classes will help you prepare for the Citizenship Test and you will also learn to use a computer to improve your language skills.

At South Tyneside college we offer ESOL courses from Pre Entry Level through to the upper Level 2. All of our courses help learners improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
All of our courses require a commitment of one day per week. This is intensive and our immersive programmes help learner’s make progress. Our courses are taught by highly experienced and qualified ESOL lecturers.

Pre Entry
Our Pre-Entry courses are the perfect way to begin your journey into the English language. Covering reading, writing and speaking and listening skills, our learners soon start to speak basic English phrases and recognise key vocabulary. This is an immersive course which promotes speaking from day one. The length of time spent in the Pre-Entry group is dependent on the progress made by the student.

Entry 1, 2 & 3 and Level 1 & 2
The Entry 1, 2 & 3 and Level 1 & 2 qualifications are part of a suite of ESOL Skills for Life qualifications which are designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to communicate effectively through reading, writing and/or speaking and listening in their everyday life, study or the world of work. NOCN ESOL improves lives and enhances career prospects, with many learners progressing onto further study or employment.
All of these qualifications are suitable for learners aged 16 years or over. These qualifications will provide learners with an opportunity to:

  • achieve a qualification that enables the learners to focus on the acquisition of reading, writing and/or speaking and listening skills within the English language,
  • focus on the practical skills required to learn English,
  • progress onto the functional skills qualifications or GCSE English or other vocational study.

All students will have an Initial Assessment to assess their reading, writing and speaking & listening skills. They will have an interview and be placed in a group at an appropriate level.

For the majority of our students there is no cost to the programmes. However, this does depend on circumstances. Please contact our Student Services team for more information – info@stc.ac.uk

Most students will also be able to apply for a student bursary if they study more than one subject at the college. This is also subject to eligibility and can cover travel, food and childcare.
