Multi-Skills in Construction Level 1
OVERVIEW
The City & Guilds 6219 Level 1 Construction qualification is designed to help learners explore different construction trades and gain essential practical skills and knowledge. It is delivered in a training environment using simulated conditions, where learners demonstrate their individual abilities through the completion of required tasks.
There are three progression routes within the qualification:
- Award (minimum 9 credits)
- Certificate (minimum 15 credits)
- Extended Certificate (minimum 27 credits)
Each route builds on core knowledge and develops practical trade skills in areas such as carpentry, bricklaying, and electrical installation.
The course will cover essential skills in the following trades:
- Bricklaying
- Carpentry and Joinery
- Electrical Installation
Alongside this it will also cover the important Health and Safety units within construction.
Core Units (all routes):
- 101: Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction
Covers basic awareness of health and safety laws, responsibilities of employers and employees, COSHH, RIDDOR, and HASWA. - 102: Introduction to The Construction Industry
Provides an overview of construction trades, professional roles, types of buildings, sectors, and sustainability.
Award Route (9 Credits):
- 101: Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction (3 credits)
- 001: Constructing Halving Joints (3 credits) – Marking out, using chisels and saws, forming joints with glue/nails/screws.
- 005: Constructing Half Brick Walling (3 credits) – Mixing mortar, tool use, setting out, bricklaying.
Certificate Route (15 Credits):
- 101: Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction (3 credits)
- 102: Introduction to The Construction Industry (3 credits)
- 104: Constructing Angled Halving Joints (4 credits)
- 119: Constructing Half Brick Return Corners (4 credits)
- 134: Constructing PVC Wiring Systems (4 credits)
Extended Certificate Route (27 Credits):
- 101: Introduction to Health and Safety in Construction (3 credits)
- 102: Introduction to The Construction Industry (3 credits)
- 104: Constructing Angled Halving Joints (4 credits)
- 105: Constructing Bridle Joints (4 credits)
- 119: Constructing Half Brick Return Corners (4 credits)
- 120: Construction of Cavity Walls in Brickwork (4 credits)
- 133: Assembling 13Amp Switched Sockets in a Wired Final Circuit (4 credits)
- 134: Constructing PVC Wiring Systems (4 credits)
GCSE Maths – Grade 2
GCSE English – Grade 2
Knowledge Units (101 & 102):
Assessed through booklets. Learners are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction based on task completion and quality of answers.
Practical Units:
Assessed through hands-on tasks, oral and written questions. Each practical element is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction depending on performance.
To successfully complete each route, learners must achieve the required number of credits through a combination of core and practical units.
On completion of the Level 1 qualification, learners may:
- Progress to Level 2 in a chosen construction trade.
- Advance from Level 2 to Level 3 in the same occupation.
- Move into technical, supervisory, or management qualifications at Level 2 or Level 3.
- Seek employment in the construction industry with foundational trade skills and knowledge.
For students aged 16-18 who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in Maths or English, these subjects will be included in your timetable along with your main course. Improving your skills in Maths and English is essential, as these qualifications open doors to further study and career opportunities.

All 16-18 students must study maths and/or English as part of their main study programme, there is no option to study maths and/or English on its own.
The qualification aligns with NVQ units, providing a pathway to occupational competence.
Simulated training environments prepare learners for real-world site conditions.
The course supports those looking to explore multiple trades before specialising.
