Pearson BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Art and Design Skills

Overview

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with teachers and industry professionals to ensure that it supports progression to further study or training at Level 3. These consultants have ensured that the content is appropriate for study at Level 2, and consistent with current industry practice, providing learners with a foundation in the skills needed to progress to further education with an understanding of industry and the roles and opportunities available to them.

This qualification is a one-year program of study, in which you will develop a range of skills through drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture workshops amongst others.

If you have a strong interest in Art and Design and want to advance your skills and knowledge in areas such as Fine Art, Fashion and Textiles, Set Design, Graphics and Digital Design then this course is an excellent start for you.

During this year you will be set several projects where you will make your own work using the skills taught to you. You will learn about a variety of artists and designers alongside making your own creations from a set brief.

You will work individually and with your peers in a professional studio environment. You will learn team building skills, independent learning skills and studio management skills as part of your course.

You will assemble a portfolio alongside you course to collate the best of your work to present in professional settings.

There will be opportunities to visit galleries and other creative settings as part of your studies.

As part of the course, you will work with professional artists and designers enabling you to transfer your skills to real life industry work experiences. You will learn about how to display your work as part of an exhibition in an end of year show.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification. However, you may find it helpful if you have a Level 1 qualification. 

Evidence of interest in art, in the form of a sketchbook or a portfolio of work or images of artwork you have done.

If you do not hold a maths or English qualification, you will be expected to study these alongside your course.

Assessment is based on your project coursework and is continuous through each unit.

Learners taking this qualification will study two mandatory learning and teaching modules:
  • Exploring and Developing Art and Design Skills
  • Personal Development.

Learners who complete this qualification may progress to further learning at Level 3. This qualification gives learners the opportunity to develop their technical art and design skills through a process of self-evaluation, practice, and review. In addition to the sector-specific content available in this qualification, the requirements mean that learners develop the transferable skills needed to progress to further education and ultimately higher education and employment.

Learners will need to work towards GCSE grade 4 or above in English and maths prior to progressing onto BTEC level 3 Foundation Art and Design Practice, should they intend to apply after the L2 course.

Most materials are provided for learners; however, you should arrive with a pencil case with basics including pens, pencils, pencil sharpener and eraser. 

You will be expected to work in your own time (homework) as part of the course.
