Students at South Tyneside College recently took a major step towards their future careers as Level 4 Salon Management learners showcased their skills at the VTCT Skills Hair & Barbering Collective Live event on 10th March.
The event brought together students, industry professionals, and employers, creating a real-world platform for learners to demonstrate not only their technical ability, but also the confidence, resilience, and professionalism needed to succeed in the hair and barbering industry.
Leading the showcase, students Jessica Wells-Auchterlonie, Fay Turbitt, and Shauna Foster delivered an impressive display of modern barbering and styling techniques. From precision fades and on-trend cuts to creative styling such as French twists, textured buns, and 90s-inspired looks, the event highlighted both their creativity and industry readiness.
But beyond the techniques, the experience was about something bigger — growth, teamwork, and belief in their future.
In the lead-up to the event, students spoke about their nerves, but also the strong support they felt for one another. That sense of teamwork carried them through, turning pressure into pride as they stepped off stage having successfully delivered a live industry-standard showcase.
The event formed part of their Marketing and PR module, giving students valuable experience in planning, promoting, and executing a professional event — skills that are essential for those looking to progress into senior roles or even run their own businesses.
For many, this experience has helped shape clear next steps. Some students are preparing to return to the industry full-time, while others are considering self-employment, recognising the flexibility and opportunities the sector can offer.
Working alongside industry partners, including Cloud Nine, students also gained insight into professional expectations, career pathways, and the standards required to succeed in a competitive and fast-moving industry.
Experiences like this show how a career in hair and barbering can open doors — whether that’s working in high-end salons, becoming self-employed, managing a team, or even progressing into education or specialist roles. It’s an industry that rewards creativity, confidence, and a willingness to keep learning.
Most importantly, students left the event motivated, inspired, and ready to take the next step — proving that with the right skills and mindset, a career in hair and beauty can truly change your future.
