T Level students gain real-world experience on new campus development

Students at South Tyneside College are getting a unique opportunity to see how their college is evolving while continuing their studies, through direct involvement in the development of the college’s new campus.

Among those taking part are Ryan Ford, 18, from Cramlington, and Oliver Fowler, 19, from Boldon, who are studying T Level Building Services Engineering for Construction. They are among the first cohort of students to take part in on-site learning activities linked to the major development project.

During their placements, students attend planning sessions with the college’s project team and are introduced to Building Information Modelling (BIM), a digital tool used across the construction industry to coordinate information and manage complex developments. These experiences provide valuable insight into real-world project delivery, helping learners develop technical skills, build confidence, and strengthen their understanding of industry practice.

As Ryan explains:

It’s a pinch me moment seeing something I’ve worked on becoming a real building. I’ll walk past here in the future knowing I was part of it.

These opportunities allow students to apply their learning in a live environment, reinforcing classroom knowledge while developing practical, work-ready skills.

The £95 million development will provide modern, state-of-the-art facilities for learners across South Tyneside and the wider region. As the project progresses, current students are able to actively contribute to its development, gaining first-hand experience of how large-scale construction projects are delivered.

T Level students will continue to take part in placements throughout the year, supported by college tutors and on-site staff, ensuring learning is closely aligned with industry standards and expectations.

Dr Lindsey Whiterod CBE, Chief Executive of Tyne Coast College, said:

Providing our students with real-world experience is a key part of T Level delivery. The development offers a fantastic opportunity for learners to develop skills, gain confidence, and see the impact of a major project while they study. It’s inspiring to see our students contributing to facilities that will benefit future generations.

Through initiatives like this, South Tyneside College continues to provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that support student progression and future success, while also demonstrating its ongoing commitment to skills development in the local community.
