Returning to education after a long break can feel daunting, but for Nicola Scott, taking that first step at the age of 40 has led to opportunities she never imagined.
Four years ago, Nicola joined South Tyneside College with a determination to create a better future for herself and her family. Like many adult learners, she lacked confidence and was unsure whether returning to education later in life was the right decision. However, with the support of college staff and a commitment to achieving her goals, she soon discovered she was capable of much more than she realised.
Nicola began her journey by studying Access to Higher Education Humanities Levels 2 and 3 while also completing Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths.
Nicola said:
The Access course gave me the confidence to believe in myself again. It helped me develop the academic skills I needed and prepared me for studying at a higher level.
After successfully completing her Access studies, Nicola progressed onto the Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Services and Criminology.
The course enabled her to explore key areas of criminology, criminal justice and public services while developing valuable research, analytical and communication skills. Studying within a supportive Higher Education environment and smaller class sizes allowed Nicola to build strong relationships with tutors and receive personalised guidance throughout her studies.
Alongside her academic commitments, Nicola balanced family life, worked part-time and took on the role of Student Union President during the 2024-25 academic year.
Balancing education, work and family responsibilities was challenging at times, but every achievement along the way reminded me why I started this journey.
Her role as Student Union President helped her further develop confidence, leadership and communication skills while representing students and contributing to the wider college community.
Reflecting on her time at South Tyneside College, Nicola credits the support from tutors and staff as one of the key factors in her success.
Throughout my journey, the support from tutors and staff has been outstanding. Having people around me who genuinely cared about student success made a huge difference to both my confidence and personal development. Tutors such as Abbey Fox encouraged me to believe in my abilities and continue pushing myself academically.
Nicola’s hard work and dedication have now secured her a place at the University of Sunderland, where she will progress to a Level 6 Honours Degree in Criminology. She has also been awarded a Student Impact Scholarship in recognition of her academic achievements and personal statement.
Receiving the scholarship was a proud moment and a reflection of the commitment she has shown throughout her studies.
My journey shows that it is never too late to return to education. With determination, support and resilience, adult learners can achieve far more than they may ever have believed possible.
