Level 3 Creative Digital Media Production student, Jessica de Beer has won the Matthew Hale Award at the Northern Writers Awards 2020.
Jessica, who has been interested in creative writing from a young age, was nominated for the prestigious writing award by English lecturer, Hazel Storr earlier this year.
With a creative imagination, Jessica developed her writing skills over a number of years and credits her amazing writing skills to her love of books and reading.
Jessica, who has such a passion for English, said:
I am so honoured to receive such an amazing award. I never thought my writing would be good enough to give me such a wonderful opportunity and this award has truly lifted my confidence as well as opening so many doors for me.
The Northern Writers Awards, produced by New Writing North and supported by Northumbria University and Arts Council England, have been established since 2000. The pioneering awards programme has been supported by hundreds of writers from the North of England to help develop creative projects and connect with the writing industry.
Jessica struggled with school for many reasons, and found herself unable to focus in most of her lessons, all but one… English. Her passion for English was evident in the amazing relationship she had with her English teachers, including current South Tyneside College English tutor, Hazel Storr.
Hazel Storr, who has been an English lecturer at the college for 6 years, said:
I am so proud of Jessica and everything she has accomplished. She has an amazing talent and she deserves the recognition this award offers.
