South Tyneside College celebrates national shortlist ahead of awards ceremony in Manchester

South Tyneside College is heading to Manchester this week for the Education North Awards 2026, after being shortlisted for a Student Experience Award in the HE/FE sector for its ESOL Football Team: Inclusive Enrichment Initiative.

The initiative was developed to support ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners, many of whom face barriers to wider college life, including social isolation, financial hardship and limited access to enrichment opportunities.

Using football as an inclusive and accessible activity, the programme brings students together through weekly coached sessions, creating a supportive environment that promotes wellbeing, confidence and a strong sense of belonging.

Through collaboration across college teams, funding was secured to cover transport, equipment and football boots – ensuring that students could take part regardless of financial circumstances. Team kits, provided by the Tyne Metropolitan College Sport department, have also helped foster pride and identity among participants.

Since launching, the initiative has supported 24 learners from a wide range of backgrounds, with many taking part in enrichment activities for the first time.

Emma Aabid, ESOL Lecturer, said:

"Football has become a powerful point of connection for our ESOL students. Their love for the team creates belonging, sparks conversation and helps them feel truly at home, both in the classroom and in the community. It has been an excellent initiative to work together on with the enrichment team and sports lecturers."

Students involved in the programme have also highlighted the positive impact it has had on their college experience, particularly in helping them build friendships and feel more connected to college life.

The initiative also plays an important role in supporting student wellbeing and creating safe, inclusive spaces within the college community.

Nicola Aris, Head of Student Services, Inclusion and Safeguarding, said:

This recognition reflects the exceptional commitment and expertise of staff in delivering inclusive, high-impact support for learners facing significant barriers. It is a powerful acknowledgement of the positive outcomes being achieved for our students.

Following its success, the model is now helping to shape wider enrichment opportunities across the college, including introductory sessions and expanded activities for foundation learners.

Being shortlisted for this national award highlights the dedication of staff and the enthusiasm of students involved, as well as the college’s commitment to creating inclusive opportunities that support every learner to succeed.
