The new 15,000 sqm campus, set to open in September 2027, marks a major investment in education and regeneration. Delivered in partnership with South Tyneside Council, and supported by Castle, the North East Combined Authority, the Department for Education, and additional public sector partners, this project will bring transformational change to the heart of South Shields.

The college gets the green light to build a multi-million-pound campus in the heart of South Shields

South Tyneside College/South Shields Marine School has taken a major step towards relocating after getting the green light to build a multi-million-pound campus in the heart of South Shields.

In a boost to ongoing town centre redevelopment, we have secured £20m of government funding to build new premises around a mile from our current site at Westoe.

The proposed new build will play a huge role in supporting our ambitions to attract more students from all parts of the North East and will benefit from newly improved Metro rail and bus infrastructure, created by South Tyneside Council’s ongoing regeneration plans.

Contractor on board for college relocation

A game-changing project to transform South Shields town centre has taken a major step forward.

A contractor has been appointed to deliver the relocation of South Tyneside College. The move will see South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School relocate from its current Westoe site into the heart of the town centre.

Castle has been selected to carry out construction of the new 15,000sq m campus, following a competitive tender process. The Hebburn-based firm has been appointed on a pre-construction services agreement ahead of an anticipated start on site in the summer.

Over the coming months, Castle will finalise detailed designs for the scheme and undertake preparatory works on site.

North East Mayor backs £18m funding boost for south shields town centre college plans

A major project to transform South Shields town centre has received a multi-million-pound funding boost.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and the North East Combined Authority have agreed in principle to award up to £18.2m towards the relocation of South Tyneside College and world-renowned South Shields Marine School.

A stunning riverfront building in South Shields town centre has been earmarked for student accommodation.

One Harton Quay could be repurposed and brought back into use as a 125-bed student facility under plans to relocate South Tyneside College.

Multi-Million-Pound Regeneration Project Underway

South Shields town centre is set for major transformation, with a multi-million-pound regeneration project now underway.

Work to deliver the relocation of South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School has started on site.

The scheme will see the college move from its current Westoe site into the heart of the town centre, with a new 15,000 sqm campus.

In public consultation carried out by South Tyneside Council, more than 80 percent of people who responded backed the idea of the college relocation, believing it would lead to a livelier town centre and help to sustain new and existing businesses.

Green Light for Student Riverside Residence

A striking riverside building in South Shields is set for a new lease of life as modern student accommodation, following the approval of a planning application by South Tyneside Council.

The former BT business centre at One Harton Quay, which overlooks the Tyne, will be repurposed into a 125-bed student residence.

The redevelopment will support the relocation of South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School into the town centre from its current Westoe site.
